McKiness Excavating has been the premier underground and grading
contractor in North Iowa for over 80 years through three generations of leadership.
McKiness Excavating is a family owned company that was started by Robert E. and Maxine McKiness in 1939.
The company was first started as a nursery and landscaping business but it quickly changed into a full
service excavating company. With Robert E.'s and Maxines hard nosed work ethic and a core of dedicated employee's,
the company grew over the years. When Robert E. and Maxine retired in 1983, they handed over control to their
sons(the boys) who grew up working for the company. R. Michael McKiness joined the Company in 1969. He
attended Iowa State University, receiving his Civil Engineering degree in 1977, retired in 2014 and passed
away in 2016. Robert H. McKiness joined the company in 1976. He attended the University of Iowa, receiving
his Business degree in 1980. Craig McKiness joined the company in 1981 and worked for the company before his
passing in 2012.
"The boys" took a small family company and turned it into the leader in the underground
and grading industry in North Iowa. The company primary work involves municipal utility work (sanitary sewer,
water and storm), site grading and utilities, private sewer and water lines, demolition and snow removal. With
a fleet of 14 semi dumps and tandem dump trucks, 10 excavators ranging from 5,000 lbs to 110,000 lbs, 6 track and
rubber tired loaders, bulldozers, motor graders, scrapers,cranes,skid loaders, forklifts, hydraulic hammers,
compactors and a wide range of other equipment and vehicles, McKiness can complete any project in a timely manner.
